Frequently Asked Question
Putting an iPad into recovery mode is a useful troubleshooting step for various issues, such as a frozen or unresponsive screen, a failed software update, or if the device is stuck on the Apple logo. In addition, if the iPad is locked with a passcode or if Apple Configurator is not recognizing it, placing it into Recovery Mode should be done first.
The process differs depending on whether your iPad has a Home button.
For iPads with a Home Button
This method applies to older iPad models that have the physical circular button at the bottom of the screen.
- Connect your iPad to a computer. Use a compatible USB cable to connect your iPad to a Mac or PC.
- Open Finder or iTunes. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes.
- Initiate Recovery Mode. While your iPad is connected to the computer, press and hold both the Home button and the Top button (also known as the Sleep/Wake button) at the same time.
- Keep holding. Continue to hold both buttons even if you see the Apple logo appear.
- Release when you see the recovery screen. Release the buttons only when you see the recovery mode screen, which shows a computer icon and a cable pointing towards it.
