Frequently Asked Question

I have an iPad that needs to be placed into recovery mode so I can restore it in Apple Configurator. How do I do this?
Last Updated about a month ago

Putting an iPad into recovery mode is a useful troubleshooting step for various issues, such as a frozen or unresponsive screen, a failed software update, or if the device is stuck on the Apple logo.  In addition, if the iPad is locked with a passcode or if Apple Configurator is not recognizing it, placing it into Recovery Mode should be done first.

The process differs depending on whether your iPad has a Home button.

For iPads with a Home Button

This method applies to older iPad models that have the physical circular button at the bottom of the screen.

  1. Connect your iPad to a computer. Use a compatible USB cable to connect your iPad to a Mac or PC.
  2. Open Finder or iTunes. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes.
  3. Initiate Recovery Mode. While your iPad is connected to the computer, press and hold both the Home button and the Top button (also known as the Sleep/Wake button) at the same time.
  4. Keep holding. Continue to hold both buttons even if you see the Apple logo appear.
  5. Release when you see the recovery screen. Release the buttons only when you see the recovery mode screen, which shows a computer icon and a cable pointing towards it.

For iPads without a Home Button

This method applies to newer iPad models, such as the iPad Pro, iPad Air (4th generation and later), and iPad mini (6th generation), which do not have a physical Home button.

  3. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  4. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  5. Press and hold the Top button. Keep holding the Top button until the device begins to restart.
  6. Keep holding the Top button. Do not release the Top button when you see the Apple logo.
  7. Release when you see the recovery screen. Release the Top button only when you see the recovery mode screen, which shows a computer icon and a cable pointing towards it.
